Why Is My Garage Door Opener Not Working? Start With What You See and Hear

Most opener failures come from a short list of causes. Power, the wall control lock, a remote battery, and the safety sensors cause many of them. Worn parts such as a gear, circuit board, or motor cause the harder failures.

Try the safe checks below first. If nothing works, call (702) 829-2196 and tell us what you see and hear.

Fast answers

  • No lights and no sound: check the power
  • Remote fails but the wall button works: check the battery and lock mode
  • Motor hums but the door will not move: stop and call us
  • Door reverses: check the photo eyes

Five Safe Checks Before You Call

None of these needs tools. Do not touch springs or cables.

1. Check the power

Make sure the opener is plugged in. Test the outlet with a lamp. Check the breaker and any GFCI outlet in the garage.

2. Turn off lock mode

Many Chamberlain and LiftMaster wall controls have a Lock button. With lock mode on, the opener ignores remotes. Chamberlain says to press and hold Lock until the light stops flashing or turns solid.

3. Replace the remote battery

Many Chamberlain and LiftMaster remotes use a 3V CR2032 battery. If the wall button works but the remote does not, start here.

4. Check the photo eyes

The two sensors sit near the floor on each side of the door. Both lights should be steady. Wipe the lenses and clear anything from the beam.

5. Reset the power

Only if you can reach the plug safely, unplug the opener for about a minute and plug it back in.

Stop and call if

the motor runs but the door does not move, the door looks crooked, you heard a bang, or the door feels heavy. Do not force it. See our emergency repair page.

Why Openers Stop Working in Las Vegas

Heat

Las Vegas hit 120 degrees on July 7, 2024, according to the National Weather Service. Heat wears on circuit boards and remote batteries.

Power surges

Monsoon storms run from late June into September. A surge can damage the control board. A surge protector on the opener outlet helps.

Dust and sun

Dust on photo eye lenses can block the beam. Bright sun on a sensor can also cause false blocks.

Age and wear

Gears, belts, and boards wear out. Many openers last 10 to 15 years, according to House Digest.

Opener Not Working Questions in Las Vegas

Why is my garage door opener not working?

Common causes are no power, wall control lock mode, a dead remote battery, blocked or misaligned photo eyes, and worn parts such as a gear, circuit board, or motor.

Why does my remote not work but the wall button does?

Check the remote battery first. Then check whether lock mode is on at the wall control, because lock mode makes the opener ignore remotes. If neither helps, the remote may need reprogramming.

Why is my opener humming but not opening the door?

A hum means the motor has power but cannot move the door. Causes include a stripped gear, a weak motor, or a door out of balance. Stop using it and call us.

Why is my garage door opener light blinking?

Blinking lights and blink codes vary by brand and model. On many openers, a flash points to a sensor problem or lock mode. Check your manual for the code, then clean and check the photo eyes.

How do I reset my garage door opener?

If you can reach the plug safely, unplug the opener for about a minute and plug it back in. If a remote still fails, reprogram it using your manual. If nothing changes, call us.

Why does my garage door opener reverse?

The opener senses resistance or a blocked sensor. Dirty or misaligned photo eyes and wrong force or limit settings are common causes. Do not bypass the sensors.

Is an opener that stopped working an emergency?

It is if the door is stuck open or your car is trapped inside. Emergency service is available 24/7 and costs a little more than a regular visit. See our emergency repair page.

How much does it cost to fix an opener that stopped working?

It depends on the part that failed. Sensor, remote, and setting fixes usually cost less than gear, board, or motor work. You get the total before work starts. Our repair cost guide explains what changes the price.

Should I repair or replace an opener that stopped working?

Usually repair, if it is under 10 years old and one part failed. If it is past 15 years or keeps failing, replacement often makes more sense.

Do you repair all opener brands?

We repair LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, and Craftsman openers, and other supported brands.
