What It Means When Your Opener Clicks
Inside the opener, the control board closes a small switch called a relay when you press a button. That makes the click. After the click, the motor should turn and move the door.
If the motor does not follow, the problem is further along. If the clicking happens while the door moves, a worn or loose part is making the sound.

Two kinds of clicks
- A click, then nothing: the opener hears you but cannot move the door
- Clicking while the door moves: a worn or loose part along the door or drive
Click, Then Nothing: Six Causes
The opener got the command but cannot move the door.
Bad relay or circuit board
The relay can click without passing power to the motor. A storm or surge can damage the board.
Failed capacitor
The capacitor helps the motor start. When it fails, the opener clicks or hums without turning.
Stripped drive gear
The plastic gear inside many openers wears out. The motor may spin, but the drive does not turn.
Disconnected door
If the release cord was pulled or the door arm came loose, the opener can run without moving the door. Ryobi lists this as a cause.
Heavy door or broken spring
A broken spring makes the door too heavy to lift, and the opener stops. Signs are a loud bang, a gap in the spring, or a crooked door.
Lock mode or a sensor fault
Lock mode makes the opener ignore remotes, as Chamberlain explains. Blocked photo eyes can also stop the door.
Clicking While the Door Moves: Four Causes
If the door moves but clicks as it goes, a worn or loose part is the usual cause. We check the drive and the door, and we tell you what we find.

Worn rollers or hinges
Rollers that wear out click or grind as they roll along the track.
Loose hardware
Bolts and brackets loosen over time and click as the door moves.
Slack chain or worn trolley
A loose chain can skip. A worn trolley can click along the rail.
Misaligned tracks
Tracks that are slightly out of line make the rollers click or scrape.
What You Can Safely Check
No tools needed. Stop at the first sign of a spring problem.
Safe steps
- Press the wall button instead of the remote. If the wall button works, the remote is the problem.
- Check the Lock button on the wall control. Lock mode makes the opener ignore remotes.
- Check the photo eyes. Both lights should be steady. Wipe the lenses and clear the beam.
- Listen. One click, repeated clicks, or clicking while the door moves each point to a different cause.
- Check the power. Test the outlet and the breaker.
Do not
Do not pull the red release cord if the door is open, partly open, or you suspect a broken spring, because the door can fall fast. Do not touch springs, cables, or the brackets at the bottom corners. DASMA says they are under extreme tension. See our emergency repair page if the door is stuck.
Clicking Sounds and Likely Causes
Match what you hear to the likely cause.
| What you hear | Likely cause | Safe step | Call us when |
|---|---|---|---|
| One click, nothing moves | A bad relay, a failed capacitor, or a stripped gear | Stop pressing the button | Always |
| Repeated clicking, no movement | A failing board or lost power to the motor | Check the outlet and breaker | The clicking continues |
| Click, and the door moves a little then stops | The door is heavy or binding | Do not force the door | Always |
| Clicking while the door moves | Loose hardware, a slack chain, or worn rollers | Listen for where the sound comes from | The sound keeps getting worse |
| Clicking from the remote, no response | A weak battery or lock mode | Replace the battery and turn off lock mode | The wall button fails too |
| Clicking after a storm | Surge damage to the circuit board | Plug the opener into a surge protector later | Always |
Why Openers Click in Las Vegas
Storms and surges
Monsoon storms run from late June into September. A surge can damage the circuit board, and the opener may keep clicking.
Heat
Las Vegas hit 120 degrees on July 7, 2024, according to the National Weather Service. Heat wears on boards, capacitors, and plastic parts.
Age and wear
Gears, trolleys, and rollers wear out. Many openers last 10 to 15 years, according to House Digest.

Clicking Opener Questions in Las Vegas
Why does my garage door opener click but not open?
A click usually means the control board got your command and closed a relay. If the motor does not follow, the cause may be a bad relay, a failed capacitor, a stripped gear, a disconnected door, or a door too heavy to lift.
Why does my opener click once and nothing happens?
One click means the opener heard you but could not move the door. Check for lock mode and blocked photo eyes first. If those are fine, the problem is inside the opener or in the door.
Why does my opener click when I press the remote?
If the wall button works, check the remote battery and lock mode. If the wall button also clicks without moving the door, the problem is in the opener or the door.
Can a power surge make my opener click?
Yes. A surge can damage the circuit board, so the opener may click while part of the board still works.
Why does my door click while it moves?
Loose hardware, a slack chain, a worn trolley, worn rollers, or bent tracks can click as the door moves. A technician finds which one.
Can a broken spring make an opener click?
Yes. A broken spring makes the door too heavy to lift, so the opener strains and stops. Signs are a loud bang, a gap in the spring, or a heavy door. Stay clear and call us.
Can I use the red release cord to test the door?
Only if the door is fully closed and you are sure a spring has not broken. Pull the cord and lift slowly. If the door feels heavy, stop and call us.
How much does it cost to fix a clicking opener?
It depends on the part that failed. A relay or capacitor fix usually costs less than a new motor, and a spring problem is a separate repair. You get the total before work starts. Our repair cost guide explains what changes the price.
Is a clicking opener an emergency?
It is if the door is stuck open or your car is trapped inside. Emergency service is available 24/7 and costs a little more than a regular visit. See our emergency repair page.
Do you repair all opener brands?
We repair LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, and Craftsman openers, and other supported brands.
