Start With What Happens When You Press the Button
Find your symptom, then follow the guide.
| What happens | Likely cause | Our guide |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing at all: no lights, no sound | No power, a tripped breaker or GFCI, or a failed board | Opener not working |
| The remote fails, but the wall button works | A dead battery, lock mode, or lost programming | Remote not working |
| One click, then nothing | A bad relay, a failed capacitor, a stripped gear, or a heavy door | Clicking |
| The motor hums, but the door does not move | A stripped gear, a failed capacitor, a locked door, or a broken spring | Humming |
| The motor runs, but the door does not move | The door is disconnected from the opener, or a gear is stripped | Humming |
| The door opens a few inches or partway, then stops | Force settings, travel limits, door balance, or a binding track | Stops halfway |
| A loud bang first, or the door looks crooked | A broken spring or cable, or a door off its track | Emergency repair |
Five Safe Checks Before You Call
No tools needed. Do not touch springs or cables.
1. Check the power
Make sure the opener is plugged in. Test the outlet with a lamp. Check the breaker and any GFCI outlet in the garage.
2. Turn off lock mode
Many Chamberlain and LiftMaster wall controls have a Lock button. With lock mode on, the opener ignores remotes. Chamberlain says to press and hold Lock until the light stops flashing or turns solid.
3. Try the wall button and the remote
If the wall button works and the remote does not, the problem is the remote or its battery. If the remote works and the wall button does not, see our wall button guide.
4. Check the door locks
Release any slide lock or handle lock on the door, then press the button once. Do not keep pressing it.
5. Look for a spring problem
A loud bang, a gap in a spring, slack cables, or a crooked door means stop. Do not use the opener.
Stop and call if
the motor hums or runs but the door does not move, the door feels heavy, or your car is trapped. See our emergency repair page.
When the Door Is the Problem, Not the Opener
A weak or broken spring is the most serious cause of a door that will not open, and it can look like an opener failure. DASMA says springs, cables, and the brackets at the bottom corners are under extreme tension, so only a trained technician should adjust them.
If the door is disconnected from the opener, the motor can run without moving it. Ryobi lists that as a cause when the opener runs but the door stays put.

Do not
Do not pull the red release cord if the door is open, partly open, or you suspect a broken spring, because the door can fall fast. Do not force the door by hand if it feels heavy. Do not keep pressing the button, which can burn out the motor. See our emergency repair page if the door is stuck.
Why Openers Won’t Open the Door in Las Vegas
Heat
Las Vegas hit 120 degrees on July 7, 2024, according to the National Weather Service. Heat wears on boards, batteries, and gears.
Storms and surges
Monsoon storms run from late June into September. A surge can damage a circuit board or receiver.
Age and wear
Gears, capacitors, and springs wear out. Many openers last 10 to 15 years, according to House Digest.

Opener Won’t Open Questions in Las Vegas
Why won’t my garage door opener open the door?
Common causes are no power, lock mode, a dead remote battery, a locked or heavy door, a stripped gear, a failed capacitor, and a broken spring. What the opener does when you press the button points to the cause.
Why does the wall button open my door but the remote does not?
Check the remote battery and the Lock button on the wall control. Lock mode makes the opener ignore remotes. If neither helps, the remote may need reprogramming. See our remote guide.
Why does my opener hum but the door will not open?
A hum means the motor has power but cannot move the door. Causes include a stripped gear, a failed capacitor, a locked door, and a broken spring. Stop using it and see our humming guide.
What if the opener runs but the door does not move?
The door may be disconnected from the opener, or a gear may be stripped. Do not force the door. Our humming guide explains how to tell the difference.
Can a locked door stop my opener from opening it?
Yes. A manual slide lock or handle lock holds the door to the track, and the opener strains against it. Release the lock and try once. Do not keep pressing the button.
Can a broken spring stop my door from opening?
Yes. A broken spring makes the door too heavy to lift. Signs are a loud bang, a gap in the spring, or a heavy door. Stay clear and call us.
Can I open the door by hand?
Only if the door is fully closed and you are sure a spring has not broken. Pull the red release cord and lift slowly. If the door feels heavy, stop and call us.
Is a door that will not open an emergency?
It is if your car is trapped inside, or if the door is stuck open and you cannot secure the garage. Emergency service is available 24/7 and costs a little more than a regular visit. See our emergency repair page.
How much does it cost to fix an opener that will not open the door?
It depends on the part that failed. A remote, lock, or setting fix usually costs less than a gear, board, or motor repair, and a spring problem is a separate repair. You get the total before work starts. Our repair cost guide explains what changes the price.
Do you repair all opener brands?
We repair LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, and Craftsman openers, and other supported brands.
